The dramatic transformation of a fragmented campus at East Central High School included the replacement of 16 40-year-old permanent structures and 14 temporary modular structures with a new two-story academic building and major renovations to the cafeteria and gymnasiums. The goal of providing an enriched atmosphere of learning spaces and places for the 3,000 students was accomplished on both the interior and exterior. The 260,000-square-foot transformation included energy upgrades with vertical and horizontal shading structures to improve operational efficiency, while visually tying together the new and existing structures into a unified campus. The new buildings and major additions included the establishment of a durable perforated corrugated metal veil system of overhangs and shading devices to minimize solar gain on the east and west exposures. This also established an updated facade vocabulary that was used to enhance other existing building facades. Other features included a two-story covered outdoor teaching theatre, a 700-seat amphitheater, as well as light-filled classrooms, library and indoor circulation spaces.
