This 41,000-square-foot Monarch Center will provide a new home for Los Angeles Valley College staff, faculty and students. A new bookstore, dining hall, student health center and a student lounge will be located at the heart of the campus, providing a place for students to call home. The building mass forms a U-shaped courtyard, called Monarch Plaza, that is protected from the rain and harsh summer sun by a large high-roof canopy. This canopy collects rainwater into a single gutter resulting in a waterfall into a cistern, that allows the water to filter back into the ground water system. The Monarch Plaza will also provide a focal point to a campus sustainable park that will connect the plaza to other campus buildings.
This sustainable park will link the south and north end of campus by winding through and under the new student lounge clearly identified by the bright yellow elevated Student Lounge. As part of this project a 1000-car parking structure will be built adjacent to the Monarch Center with stairs and exits leading visitors directly past the Bookstore to the Plaza. This project has been designed to achieve a LEED Gold certification.View all projects
