SDG&E recognizes the College for sustainable energy design

(San Marco, CA) May 19, 2011 - Palomar College Governing Board received a very large check – both literally and figuratively – from San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) at the May Governing Board meeting. SDG&E representatives presented the $129,300 Savings by Design check for the energy-efficient design of the College’s Multidisciplinary Building, which opened at the beginning of the spring 2011 semester.

According to SDG&E Construction Manager Chip Fox, “we’ve had a very strong relationship with Palomar College since 1992. Palomar College consistently shows energy efficiency and sustainability in it projects.

The Multidisciplinary Building exceeded Title 24 by 31.2 percent and is a showcase building. We will hold the College up as an example of building for energy efficiency.”

The three-story, 110,000 square-foot Multidisciplinary Building provides Division offices for Arts, Media, Business and Computer Science and for Social and Behavioral Sciences. In addition, the building houses department offices and classrooms for American Indian Studies; Behavioral Sciences; Business Administration; Child Development; Computer Science and Information Systems; Economics, History and Political Science; Graphic Communications; Journalism; Multicultural Studies; and the Digital Photo Lab and Print Services. The building was funded through State Capital Outlay, with augmentation from Proposition M Bond funds.

“The SDG&E check has already been deposited to the College’s conservation fund,” stated Dr. Bonnie Anne Dowd, Palomar College Assistant Superintendent/Vice President, Finance & Administrative Services. “We will use this money to do more sustainable projects in the future.”
