Higher Education ProjectsThe Student Recreation Center at the California State University Northridge is a student-funded, 120,000-square-foot facility. The program includes 3 basketball courts, a MAC court, climbing wall, running track, multi-purpose, and fitness areas.
The design solution responded to program, context, orientation, climate, and unusual site shape: A "folded" building envelope created deep overhands on the west facade and opened to the east facade to playing fields and magnificent views beyond. This glass facade acts as a "human billboard" advertising the activities within the neighboring community.
Displacement air, solatubes, solar control fins and perforated metal screens, recycled materials, and natural light for 90% of the usable spaces are some of the building's sustainable features.
The project's mission is to create a Student Recreational Facility to create an exciting and lively place to see and be seen, where students can work out, hang out and relax in a sustainable design.
