Sonoma State University Recreation Center

Rohnert Park, California

This 53,000-sq.-ft., two story student recreation center was first building on the Sonoma Campus to use the LEED rating system as a guideline for design.

The facility houses two gyms, a suspended indoor running track, a 40-ft. climbing/bouldering wall, weight and cardiovascular training areas, as well as yoga, aerobics and exercise rooms. In addition, the facility houses staff offices, conference rooms, testing and wellness service facilities.

Almost 70% of the building is naturally ventilated and cooled. An indirect evaporative cooling system was used for the office, multipurpose and fitness rooms. Along with proper orientation and an efficient exterior skin, this building is 51% more efficient than a typical Title 24 building. In addition green materials were used in the carpet, linoleum, solid surface transaction counters, recycled glass tile, and wood from certified forests.
