Ruby Bridges Elementary School

Alameda, California

Located on the site of the decommissioned Alameda Naval Airbase, this 49,906-sq.-ft., 600 student elementary school is organized around a central quad space and provides the main circulation and gathering space for the student body. Sustainable features and an early California architectural aesthetic are apparent. Also, a focal tower provides a beacon to the community as well as a teaching tool for demonstrating light reflection much like a periscope to capture the skyline view of downtown San Francisco.
