Higher Education ProjectsThe 53,000-square-foot, two-story recreation building was designed for the Sonoma Student Union Corporation, a non-profit auxiliary corporation of the CSU system in Sonoma, CA.
The facility is composed of a 5,500-square-foot single court gymnasium, an 11,000-square-foot two-court gymnasium with divider curtain, two multi-purpose studios, fitness and wellness areas, common areas, offices and a climbing wall.
Sustainability was a driving force in the design of the building and its systems, and this is the first building on the Sonoma campus to use LEED rating system as a guideline for design. Almost 70% of the building is naturally ventilated and cooled; the campus will "night flush" the building of all hot air at night, and use it to moderate the temperature of the building. Vents in the lobby skylight and under the built-in seat, assure air movement and the natural ventilation of the lobby. An indirect evaporative cooling system was used for the office, multipurpose and fitness rooms. A destratification/ventilation system is used for the small gym. Along with proper orientation and an efficient exterior skin, this building is 40% more efficient than that of a typical Title 24 building. Significant use of green materials was accomplished in the carpet, linoleum, solid surface transaction counters, recycled glass tile, and wood from certified forests. The project was designed to meet a Silver rating from the USGBC.
